On Tuesday champions elect - Welling United - visited our humble home, bringing a fair few fans with them, but they would not be able to win the league just yet.
With last season's game still fresh in a lot of people's mind, where we won 4-2 with only nine men finishing the game. But this time we had 11 men so signs were not good!
2-0 down so we can still win 4-2 - some fans said they would "take" a 2 goal defeat in order to keep you goal difference down but the mighty Swans had other ideas and we drew level with pace and passion – that’s not the name of the goal scorers by the way - and as they say on the TV "There is only one team who is going to win this" and...and... Dave Wheeler hit the woodwork (or whatever the goals are made out of these days) so a great reverse of fortunes did not happen after all - Welling had a similar chance but a snap shot straight at Jack in our goal and all square at the end of the game.
A good following on Saturday to Tonbridge in damp and wet conditions - luckily we did not play one of the teams in the South/South West area as our game would have seen the match postponed signs coming up as Dorchester had with the referee calling the match off at 2.40. 1-0 to Tonbridge early on by one of the top scorers in the league and that how it ended with not really much to talk about the game.
So in the last three games (Farnborough-outfield player in goal / Welling and Tonbridge had the second choice goalkeeper for one reason or another) we were unable to win. The outfield Farnborough goalkeeper had two bad errors on Saturday which resulted in goals and a defeat - of course that did not happen when we played them - so hopefully Buffon will be in goal
for Billericay when we visit them on Tuesday which, by my reckoning, will result in a win for Staines. Then safety is
almost there...
