Diary of a Staines man

I would think all at STFC are fairly happy with the season so far as we are in a play-off position while I write this, accompanied by the division’s top scorers.

This helps with a few thrashings we have dished out – notably a double over Tooting and Mitcham (6-0 at home and 7-0 away) – The away game I was asked by their supporters - who I know - to draw the half time/50-50 raffle. The winning ticket was 666, the number of the beast, which was the ticket of the Tooting fan who asked me to draw the tickets out of the hat! So he was happy with GBP 50.00 or so but the devil’s ticket was not so kind to his team with a further six goals for Staines in the second half.

It was nice to see four members of the Massive at our home game against Lowestoft and the team did not disappoint with a home win. A picture of the fab four in our next home programme v Dulwich presenting the man of the match from a previous home game.

A major disappointment was losing at the first attempt this season in the FA cup – not just losing the game but the decent cash reward each team receives when they win an FA Cup game and the money increases at each round. We also have yet to win on artificial (3G / 4G) pitches with a defeat to now top of the league Hendon – and we failed to win any game on this type of surface last season – Worthing also have problems on this surface as their pitch had problems – something to do with the cement underneath I believe.

But now rectified - so that meant our scheduled away game in September was moved to nearby Bognor Regis FC and played on a Sunday. We currently are in two cup competitions- the Middlesex county cup and the FA Trophy – where the final is played at Wembley – but we are a long way from that visit.

So all is well at the Wee and P pub and their local football team are playing attractive football and even storm Brian could not halt our winning ways…
