Undefeated in 2013 - hopefully I can start all my reports like this....
To start the new year we visited Boreham Wood.
The league decides who your local team is over the Boxing day - new year day holiday. The new year day's game was similar to the boxing day encounter as goalless at half time and 1-1 after 90 minutes - The "wood" seemed to start a new competition on trying to hit the corner post rather than that thing in the middle with a net on the back but they must have lost interest in that and decided to score instead.
We battled well and really deserved an equaliser which of course we did with a good header by Sam Page. So honours were shared and surely some much needed confidence and team spirit has returned which continued on Saturday (5th) with our visit to Dover - just on the outskirts of France with only a small puddle of water in between.
I am sure they are fed up with these types of jokes but I thought I will put my one in. Dover always seem to flatter to deceive on their home ground and against us they were no different - a very disappointing first half and they did not look interested in putting any effort in the game - I am all for that of course. Jack Turner in goal has a quiet game rather than his usual busy game and it was nice to see our David Wheeler open the scoring for a half time lead and of course this was the final score so there were very happy Swans players and fans.
Our manager Marcus Gayle shook my hand (and others) on the (team and some fans) coach before heading home - not sure what my contribution to the game was? - just being there I suppose! Once we returned back to Staines (about 8 o’clock) the gates were locked and a call was put out for the security officer and groundsman to come to the ground to open up the gates to let the coach in the car park so everyone could drive home.Well nearly everyone, I am sure there was one fan who just sneaked off the coach and walked home. Mentioning no names of course but I think it was the person writing this article...
So everyone in good spirits for the visit to Basingstoke this Saturday a ground we always seem to visit at least twice a season as the original games have been postponed due to frozen/wet etc weather - So a look at the weather forecast before I go I think...
